Football Film Room Prospect Profile: Mason Rudolph, QB Oklahoma State

When you think of the powerhouses of college football this year, you probably think of the big schools like Alabama, Miami, Clemson, and so on. But Oklahoma State has been absolutely amazing this year, wielding one of college football's most prolific offenses.

Holding the reigns of the offense is senior quarterback Mason Rudolph. The experienced leader stands 6 feet and 5 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds, which is an excellent frame for a NFL. Through the first 8 games of his senior season, Rudolph has been very impressive.

Some stats to prove (through 8 games):

-Passing Yards: 2,866

-Passing TDs: 22

-Interceptions: 5

-Completion Percentage: 65.6%

With these stats alone, we can see 3 major keys to Mason's game:

1. He takes care of the football: Per game, he averages about 36 attempts. Throwing 5 interceptions with 276 attempts in 8 games is very good. The kid shows his ability to make smart decisions and make good reads within Oklahoma State's system.

2. He is a VERY efficient passer: Through the first half of this season, Rudolph has completed 65.6% of his throws. Considering the amount of times he throws the ball a game...WOW.

3. This kid can ball: Rudolph has, so far, averaged 358 passing yards a game with an average of 10.4 yards per attempt. He has proved time and time again that he can use his arm to attack opposing defenses all game long. On top of the near 3,000 yards, he also has gotten the ball in the endzone 22 times.

Now I'm going to get into the notes I took while watching his film. Although I am very impressed with his skill set, I have both good and bad perspectives to his game.

The Good:

- Rudolph has an outstanding deep ball. While I watched his film, he would hit his receivers on 40+ yard throws IN STRIDE several times a game. This kind of talent is unreal, rarely do quarterbacks have the ability to throw the deep ball that accurately. Deep Ball Comparison? Aaron Rodgers. Yup, I went there.

- Although he is more of a pocket passer, Rudolph has very good footwork and mobility for his size. He doesn't posses any type of superb speed or athleticism, but he consistently makes plays with his feet to either extend the pocket or escape the pocket. Even when he escapes the pocket, he has the ability to read downfield and make a good throw on the run.

- Rudolph is also very accurate. As i mentioned before, he has completed about 66% of his 276 pass attempts. In the film, you can see him consistently put deep throws on the streak, out route, and the corner routes ( some of the tougher throws in football), all on the money. Of course he makes bad throws here and there, but more often than not, he is very accurate with the football.

Bad:

- Unfortunately, Rudolph is part of a 1 read system and he will need to develop the ability to go through a "pro style" progressions. This hurts his stock in a minimal way, but he still has the intangibles to be successful as long as he is able to develop this stage of his mental game.

- Although he is very accurate, when he does happen to throw a bad pass, it is high. Next level players in the secondary are going to be able to pick off these types of overthrows. On top of this, he shows a lack of power in his throws. Way too many times, he lobs his passes. It was rare to see him throw a bullet pass, which is something he absolutely needs to develop. In the NFL corners, safeties, and even linebackers will be able to easily jump these lobs and intercept them.

Overall, Mason Rudolph is a very intriguing prospect. He possesses all the intangibles to be a star, but he also has A LOT to develop if he wants to have that level of success. In my personal ranking, I have Rudolph as the #2 draft prospect at QB.
